This current school year's scheduling process for next school year, 2020-2021 is still being developed.  We know that students and parent/guardians are worried about selecting courses, but we are asking that you remain patient with us as we develop the best way to reach all of our students.

High school counselors are working on reaching out to students that have not yet given their course requests.  All of our major feeder high schools (Brentsville, OP, and Stonewall) have received the teacher recommendations, a document that we do each year to help guide high school counselors with the process.  Please make sure to check your email daily as well as make sure that your voicemails are able to receive messages.

For current Parkside 6th and 7th graders who will be going into 7th and 8th grade next year, you should have received information about next year's course requests process via email.  If not, please visit the page associated with your grade level for the 2020-2021 school year found under the school counseling main page.

We appreciate each and every one of you during this time.  We couldn't have asked for a better set of students and parents/guardians to navigate this time with.  If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to reach out to your school counselor or to our Director, Ms. Wines.

                                                                    FAQs

As a new practice for the 2020-2021 school year, teachers have made recommendations for students to be placed into an extended class.  If a student was in an extended class for the 2019-2020 school year, they will remain in that class unless requested by the parent to go into a regular class or by the teacher after a conversation is had with the parent.  Since we are unable to use SOL scores to assist in the placement of extended classes, teacher recommendations will be required.

What is the qualification for an extended class?
Students must have passed their SOL associated with that subject with at least a 450, passed the subject the previous year with at least a B+, and teacher recommendation.  Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SOL scores will not be used heavily in making determination of placement.  We will be working directly with teachers and parents if there are questions with the placement.

What is the qualification for a foreign language class?
Students must have passed their language arts SOL with at least a 475 and have teacher recommendation.  For 6th grade students they must have applied to the world language program and been accepted.  For students taking the second or third sequence of the world language, they must have successfully completed the previous class.

Does my student have to take a music class in 6th and 7th grade?
For the 2020-2021 school year, a music class is not required.

What are my student's elective rotations?
All grade levels next year will be on an A/B rotation for year long electives and will be on an everyday quarter rotation for listed quarterly classes.  Students will have an opportunity to select one year long elective and will be given 4 quarter elective classes OR they select 3 year long electives which would not include any of the quarter classes.

The only exception to this currently is our students who are identified as Signet.  The Signet elective will be placed into the student's schedule based on their selections and our class availability.

Why didn't my student get into a selected elective class?
Students are placed into their preferred encore classes space permitting.  There are times when we just don't have enough classroom "seats" to accommodate all requests.  Requests are entered into the computer and then the system generates classes based on seats.  This is a random assignment to allow for the fairest class selections.
