Week of March 23, 2020

March 24, 2020
I am writing you with mixed feelings.  I do believe the decision to close for the remainder of the school year was made with a lot of consideration and wisdom.  However, I am saddened, knowing that I will not get to return to see you all in person for the remainder of the school year. However, that being said, we are in unchartered territory and will continue moving forward toward success together.  I do not have any answers right now as to what that is going to look like, but I will do everything I can to support you and help you.

Please continue to check here for class updates and check your Office 365 email.  Please be patient as we navigate through this together. As always, I am here for each and every one of my students and their families and you can contact me with questions or concerns.

All of the units we have covered to this point in the school year are under Files and Documents

Under Files and Documents is an IXL document listing IXL practice for each unit.

Under Useful Links are some activities you can use to practice what we have covered so far this school year.

As of right now, these activities are optional.
We had just completed the Unit 5 Summative test, these grades will be posted by the end of the week.

PIPs/Retakes/Make-ups - Students will still have the opportunity to retake/makeup material from the 3rd quarter.  We are looking into ways to best handle this.  If you would like to PIP/retake/makeup any material, please email me and we will facilitate it.

Stay safe and healthy.

March 23, 2020
I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out via email:  melaraka@pwcs.edu

Because of the time off due to Coronavirus, I will communicate any important information here through the class webpage.  I will post any updates here with instructions for expectations and due dates.  At this time (as of 3/23), no new material / units will be assigned; however, if this changes, the materials and instructions will be available here.

I will be continuing to use this webpage to provide instructional materials and information.

Current Material/Unit - Quadrilaterals:
Under Files and Documents are the units we have covered up to this point in the year.

**Students should continue to use IXL for additional practice

If at any time, you have any questions, please ask. I am here to help :)
Stay safe and healthy.

Week of March 09, 2020
We are beginning Unit 6, Quadrilaterals.  We are working on an investigation using Anglegs to recreate the quadrilaterals and measure their side lengths and angles.  The students were given a note page for the properties that they have been filling in during class.
The test will be Monday, March 16, 2020.  Unlike the past few units, students will NOT be able to use their study guides on the test.  This unit has a lot of memorization of the properties of the Quadrilaterals (Parallelogram, Rectangle, Rhombus, Square, Isosceles Trapezoid, Right Trapezoid).  Students should focus on the Quadrilateral family tree and the properties.

The last day of the quarter is 3/27.
Students may complete retakes during Advisory or after school on Tuesdays / Thursdays.  There is a 4:30 activity bus.  If a student wants to complete a retake, the process is still the same:  Signup on the retake border for a review (IXL) and date / time.  If a student has NOT completed a review, they will not be able to retake. IXL review can  also be completed at home.  Students log in with CLEVER through their Office 365 account.
On 3/25, we will have a retake day in class for students to finish any retakes that they have not yet completed. Students will still need to complete review before completing a retake.

Week of February 24, 2020
We are continuing our Unit 5 - Functions.  Students should be comfortable finding slope from a table, from a graph, and from an equation.   If given the slope and a point on the line, they should be able to graph the line.  if given the y-intercept and a point on the line, they should be able to graph the line.

The Unit 5 Functions test will be Thursday, 3/05/2020

Week of February 10, 2020

We are starting Unit 5 Functions.  This unit relies on previous knowledge of graphing in the coordinate plane (x,y) ordered pairs.  Students will be finding slope from a graph, a table, equation, and solving practical problems.
This unit is approximately 4 weeks and we will be testing the first week of March.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if your student would like additional practice of any of the concepts.

Retakes were to be completed by Friday, January 17th.  I am staying after on Tuesday and Thursday this week.  If a student was not able to complete their retake by last Friday, they need to come see me, complete the IXL assignments (that are posted in the classroom) AND signup to stay after on Tuesday or Thursday to complete the retake.  When they signup, they need to indicate which learning target they will be retaking.

We will be beginning Unit 4b on Similar Figures.  This is a short unit and the Unit Test will be next week.    Both Unit 4a and 4b will count towards students' 3rd Quarter grades.

Week of January 13, 2020
Last week was a bit of a mixed up week with the early dismissal, snow day, late start.
Hopefully this week we can get back on track :)

The Unit 4 test on ratios and proportions will be on Friday, January 17, 2020.  The students will receive a study guide on Thursday to help prepare them for the test.

Homework is due on Friday.  Many students are not completing their homework.  Homework is meant to provide students practice / review on topics from the beginning of the school year.  (A pre-SOL review on going review.  The intent is to review previous topics from the school year).  There are usually only 8 problems a WEEK.

All retakes need to be completed by Friday, January 17, 2020.  Students need to complete extra practice/remediation and sign up for a time to complete the retakes.  I will be staying after school on Tuesday and Thursday for students to complete retakes.  Students may come at lunch time / Advisory for remediation or complete IXL at home.

Next Monday, January 20, 2020 there will be no school for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Week of January 06, 2020

Hopefully everyone who has a valid email address on file received my email through the HUB.  If you did not receive an email from me last Friday, please email me and let me know.

The Unit 3b test on Inequalities will be on Monday and Tuesday.  Students will be taking a paper/pencil test to show their work.  Once they are completed, they will input their solutions into Naiku.  Many students have not been showing their work.  If they do not show their work, it is difficult for us to determine where their misconceptions are as well as it is difficult for them to solve the problems accurately without performing all of the required steps.

We will begin Unit 4 on Proportional Reasoning.  (ratios and proportions).

Homework Number 12 will be due on Friday.  Homework is additional practice and a review of previous covered material.  Students should be attempting to complete this and bringing their questions to class.  Students should NOT be waiting until we review the homework to fill in the answers.  This does not give the students the extra practice they need to review the material.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Week of December 02, 2019

We are continuing our inequalities unit.  The Unit test will be on Friday, December 06, 2019.
Students should remember that an inequality has a solution set (versus an equation that has 1 solution).  Students have been practicing solving and graphing inequalities.
Homework is due on Friday.

Week of November 25, 2019

This is a short week.  There is  No Homework this week.
Some students are finishing up their Single and Multi Step Equations test.  Students are required to show their work (all of the steps they are taking to solve for the unknown value of x).
