2019-2020 : Hello, I am Ms. Hayes and I will be teaching 6th grade Science. I have been teaching in Prince William County for thirty years, twenty-eight of those years here  at Parkside Middle School. I am a Navy veteran, love traveling, reading, and especially hiking in Virginia. I look forward to the coming school year and meeting the students.

Parkside Middle School will begin a transition toCanvas, a studentlearningmanagementsystem, beginning on Monday, May 4th.  Canvas will allow students to access each of theirunique set of classes and find their course content in one location. Canvas Student Apps can be downloaded by clicking the following links: download forApple,download for AndroidParent and student resources, as well as direct links to the Canvas webpage, can be found on the PWCS Instructional Technology page byclicking hereWhile we at Parkside are excited about using Canvas, we understand that it will be a learning process for teachers, students, and families.  We are here to help and excited to learn and grow together!

La Escuela Parkside Middle comenzará una transición a Canvas, un sistema de gestión de aprendizaje estudiantil, a partir del lunes 4 de mayo. Canvas permitirá a los estudiantes acceder a cada una de sus clases  y encontrar el contenido de su curso en una ubicación. April 27 - May 1  We are continuing with our review on Space. Take care and email me (hayeslm@pwcs.edu) if you have problems.



April 20-24  We are starting a review on Space.   Don't forget that this is the last week you can re-test or do missing work. The grading period ends on Friday. Take care and email me (hayeslm@pwcs.edu) if you have problems.




April 13-17  The schedule you should have been sent tells you you have Science on Thursdays from 10:30-11:15 & from 11:30 to 12:15. I will be posting your weekly assignments throughout the whole week on my calendar and you can choose to do just during the Science time on Thursdays or a little at a time during the week. What ever is best for you. Please remember that all re-dos must be done by April 24th when the grading period ends. A new assignment will be posted weekly. Sept 9 - 13   This week we have been reviewing the parts of the Scientific Method. Three in class assignments (which became homework if not completed in class) have been given this week and are due Friday, September 13.  The classes have been having a few problems so we will be in Scientific Method one more week. I have posted some useful links and files which could help reinforce the learning in my class.

Sept 16 - 20  We have finished the Scientific Method and will begin Space next week.

Sept 23 - 27 We have started the Space Unit. This week we will be talking about the inner and outer planets, gravity, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The test is Tuesday and I have put notes to study in the Calendar and in Files and Documents and the Study Guide in the Homework section.

Sept 30 - Oct 4 We are continuing with space. This week we will study famous astronomers and the Earth's rotation and and revolution. I will be posting notes (under files & documents) and videos (under useful links) of our class presentations.

Oct 7 - Oct 11  We will have our next Quiz on Wednesday, Oct 9.  The study guide is under Files and Documents. We will be learning about space technology this week. 

Oct 14 - 15  This week we will learn about the Moon and its phases as well as how it affects tides.  A research project will be assigned today and it is due no later that October 25.  Details can be found on the calendar and the Homework folder.

Nov 8  Next week we will begin the Matter Unit. No school Monday for Veteran's Day!

Nov 20  We continue with matter and have had an Atom quiz which many need to retake.  The test on Friday will be a short one concerning the periodic table and those that need to retake the Atom quiz may do so Friday also.

Nov 26  We are having a quiz on chemical and physical changes today and I also hope everyone has a relaxing and safe holiday! 

Dec 9  We are having a Matter Unit Test Thursday. The study guide is located under Homework. Science Fair Information is available on the Calendar and under Files and documents.  Please note that your child does not have to do the Science Fair. They can do a research project instead.

Dec 16 - 20  We have started the Energy Unit this week. Our first quiz will be Thursday on Potential & Kinetic energy. The study guide is on the calendar and under homework.

January 13-17  We are still in the Energy Unit and grading ends next Friday for this 9 weeks. We are almost half way through the school year. The students have been told (almost daily) that make-ups and retakes must be done before the 9 weeks end. The science research paper instructions have been posted under Files and Documents.

February 6  We will beginning a new unit next week. We will be studying Weather and Climate. This is a reminder that all Science Research papers & Models are due next Friday (February 14).  For those doing Science Fair instead, your project is also due so it can be graded before the Fair.

March 23  We will begin, through this week, 
reviewing the scientific method. Please refer to the calendar for daily assignments.

March 26 
I will begin putting retests on my website (on the calendar) https://parksidems.pwcs.edu/departments/6th_grade/6th_grade_science/linda_hayes. Students have three weeks to complete. Today's test is Energy Transformation.

March 27 All the Re-Tests have been posted on my Calendar. Either enter your answers in an email or attach your answers to an email.  You can do them anytime but check Student VUE to see if you need to re-test. hayeslm@pwcs.edu

March 30 The review work for this week has been posted.
