Hi Students

This week we will all be moving to Canvas - you will need to log into your office 365 PWCS account. You will be able to access this weeks online work activities on Canvas. 

Please watch this video to learn how to use Canvas first. 


Dear Students and Parent/Guardians,

Parkside Middle School will begin a transition toCanvas, a student learning managementsystem, beginning on Monday, May 4th.  Canvas will allow students to access each of their unique set of classes and find their course content in one location. Canvas Student Apps can be downloaded by clicking the following links: download forApple,download for AndroidParent and student resources, as well as direct links to the Canvas webpage, can be found on the PWCS Instructional Technology page byclicking hereWhile we at Parkside are excited about using Canvas, we understand that it will be a learning process for teachers, students, and families.  We are here to help and excited to learn and grow together!

La Escuela Parkside Middle comenzará una transición a Canvas, un sistema de gestión de aprendizaje estudiantil, a partir del lunes 4 de mayo. Canvas permitirá a los estudiantes acceder a cada una de sus clases  y encontrar el contenido de su curso en una ubicación. Las aplicaciones para estudiantes de Canvas se pueden descargar haciendo clic en los siguientes enlaces: descargar para Apple, descargar para Android. Los recursos para padres y estudiantes, así como los enlaces directos a la página web de Canvas, se pueden encontrar en la página de Tecnología Educativa de PWCS haciendo clic aquí. Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

I hope you are all doing well and staying safe. Please refer to my calendar ( it is on the left hand side of the screen) as I have posted work for students to do this week while they are at home. Remember this work is 
OPTIONAL and will not be graded, however it will provide students a chance to practice their science skills while school is closed. Please feel free to email be if you have any questions or concerns.

In the 2019 - 2020 school year topics covered are as follows:

September - PS1 - Scientific Investigations - 
standard units of measure, experimental design, data collection, representation, and display, analysis and logical reasoning.

October - PS2 - Nature of Matter - elements, mixtures, compounds, physical and chemical properties, states of matter.

November - PS3 and PS4 - Structure of Matter - atomic structure and molecular structure, classification of matter, and periodic table.

December - PS5 - Chemical Interactions - 
balancing chemical equations and identifying physical and chemical changes.

January - PS7 - Heat and Energy Transformations - thermal energy, temperature scales, heat transfers through conduction, convection, and radiation, and potential and kinetic energy.

February - PS10 - Force and Motion - Newton's laws of motion, force, work, power, and simple machines.

March - PS8 and PS9 - Waves, Sound and Light - mechanical waves, transverse waves, electromagnetic waves, compression (longitudinal) waves.

April - PS11 - Electricity and Magnetism - electric circuits and electromagnets

May - 6th and 7th grade SOL material Review

June - SOL testing

Jefferson Lab Science SOL Practice


  1. Go to the SOL site
  2. Choose Science 8 under Science Tests
  3. Number of Questions should be 20
  4. Add your name
  5. Choose “Select Additional Options” and then click on Next Options Screen
  6. Choose ALL years and then click on Next Options Screen
  7. Choose one of the strands listed, beginning with ”Scientific Investigation”, then click on Next Options Screen.
  8. Click on Fixed Set Number 1 for your first quiz and then click on Let’s Start! You will do Fixed Set Number 2 for your second quiz.
  9. You will take two 20 question quizzes each week, following the due dates below.
  10.  After you complete a quiz, you need to show proof to the teacher. This can include:
    1. Print off the results page and turn in.
    2. Email your results to the teacher: calderdp@pwcs.edu
    3. Take a picture of your results (make sure the date is in the pic).
  11.   Feel free to take more than the required quizzes to give yourself additional practice. The more you practice, the more prepared you will be for the SOL in May!

- Test on September 23rd. (Check files and links)
- If you are in period number 2 or 3, you can retake the test on September 24th after school (3:30 to 4:30). Period number 4, 5 and 1 are going to retake the test on September 26th after school (3:30 to 4:30). Do not forget to bring your science binder with you.  

- You can retake your grade on October 1st after school (3:30 to 4:30).Do not forget to bring your science binder with you.

- UNIT TEST: NATURE OF MATTER is going to be on October 10th.  
TOPICS: MEASUREMENT- CONVERSIONS  - DENSITY - PARTICLE THEORY (states of matter and their properties)- MATTER (elements, compounds, mixtures)- PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES (do not forget to remember the characteristics properties)- SOLUTIONS (unsaturated, saturated, super saturated, soluble, insoluble, solution, solute, solvent ) and pH (acid, base and neutral substance) .

- TIME TO RETAKE: If you want to retake your unit test, I am going to wait for you on October 22nd (after school).
- There is a quiz about periodic table this week, so do not forget to check the links.
