Dear Parents/Guardians of Rising Ninth Grade Students:
It is the time of year when eighth graders are excitedly making plans for high school. Very soon, they will be selecting courses for their ninth grade year.
Effective with the ninth grade class of 2010-11, there are several new graduation requirements of which you and your student should be aware. In most instances, these new requirements differ from current graduation requirements, depending on the diploma students choose to pursue:
1. Two new diplomas have been added:
Standard Technical Diploma (22 standard units of credit, plus six verified units of credit)
Advanced Technical Diploma (26 standard units of credit, plus nine verified units of credit)
**The Standard and Advanced Technical diplomas place greater emphasis on career
and technical education and must include an approved career concentration.
2. The number of standard units of credit required for the Advanced Studies Diploma has
increased:
Advanced Studies Diploma (26 standard units of credit, increased from the current 24 standard units of credit, plus nine verified units of credit)
Standard Diploma (remains at 22 standard units of credit, plus six verified units of credit)
Modified Standard Diploma (remains at 20 standard units of credit; no verified units of credit are required)
3. An Economics and Personal Finance Course will be required for the Standard, Standard
Technical, Advanced Studies, and Advanced Technical Diplomas.
4. Previously both the Standard and Advanced Studies Diplomas required one credit in
either fine arts or career and technical education. Only the Advanced Studies Diploma
required standard units of credit in foreign language. New requirements are as follows:
Standard Diploma - two standard units of credit in foreign language, fine arts, or career and technical education.
Standard Technical - one standard unit of credit in fine arts or foreign language. In addition, this diploma requires four standard units of credit in career and technical education, to include a career concentration.
Advanced Technical - one standard unit of credit in fine arts or career and technical education. This diploma also requires three standard units of credit in career and technical education, to include a career concentration.
5. Algebra I, Parts 1 and 2, will no longer count as two math credits. Part 1 will count as elective credit only; Part 2 will count as one math credit.
6. Students who have completed Geometry but are not yet ready for Algebra II may take the course Algebra, Functions and Data Analysis as a third math.
Both middle and high school counselors are working with your students to assist them in understanding the new graduation requirements as they select their ninth grade courses and plan for high school graduation. If you have additional questions regarding these requirements, please contact your son’s or daughter’s school counselor.
Sincerely,
